Currently working on the backgrounds for episode one. Here're some samples.

Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-14603278350990835632009-04-09T14:44:00.006-04:002009-04-09T14:59:43.039-04:00Flash Comic Mockup TestI've finally got a very very rough demo to show off in regards to my flash comic. Please forgive the crudeness, but it's meant to be a test for me to see how readable this format would be. I'm pretty happy with the results, although there are a few issues I'd like to iron out, such how how to time the panels popping and how many transitional panels I should throw in.

There's lots of things that are incomplete with this. First off, the panels should pop up onto the screen, instead of just instantly appearing. And of course, the drawings themselves are very rough and not complete. And there are supposed to be bits of animation in a few of the panels that are obviously missing. For now, though, you can see what I've been working on the past little while.

You might want to let it load for a bit before starting the demo. Just click on the flash screen and it'll start.

*EDIT
Ok, looks like the embedding of the flash file causes the blog layout to get screwed up, so you'll have to go to this link instead.

More updates as they come.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-4099846274116549792009-03-16T19:01:00.004-04:002009-03-16T19:13:33.777-04:00White CurrentsSo I figure I'll try to post more regular updates on what I'm working on. I wanted to keep updates regarding my digital comic series, White Currents, on a separate blog, but I figure it'll be easier to keep things in one location.

Right now I'm in the storyboarding/design phase. Because I'm working on this on my own, I won't be doing too much in terms of making polished boards or designs or anything. Just things which I'll be able to look at for my own reference. I really want to get some kind of demo out as soon as I can, so I'll be focusing on producing a short prologue or trailer first.

So I'll just leave it with scans of some of the storyboards I have, along with a sketch I did for one of the characters. You'll have to ignore the pieces of dialogue in the storyboard. Those are placeholders for now.

Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-69220004755736967852009-03-10T16:41:00.003-04:002009-03-10T16:56:53.118-04:00Work in ProgressNew blog template is a work in progress. I'm trying to make it match my website in appearance, which recently got a overhaul.

I'm also working on my flash comic. Doing a test comic right now, to see how I'll be putting it together. I'll post progress as soon as I get something presentable done.

All in all, I feel pretty good. I feel like things are finally in motion now. There was a setback when I started playing EVE Online again, but I think I reigned my obsession in check.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-63451857720313193712009-01-21T22:50:00.004-05:002009-01-22T09:03:56.273-05:00Business Plan?!The past 6 or so months, I've been working at March as a Flash animator. That tenure is coming to an end, thank the gods. I've been stuck in Sudbury this whole time, and been through quite a bit of drama. I'm so excited to be done here and going back to Toronto. I'll be moving in with my friends, the same guys who I was with during my 4th year in school. That'll be good, I can't wait.

Sad part is that I'll be out of a job. So now I have to worry about finding a source of income to pay for rent and other living expenses. The animation job market is pretty dry right now, sadly.

But I've been thinking lately. I know I just started out my career, and maybe I'm jumping the gun by saying this, but I'm really sick of animating, especially for someone else. The reason I got into art and animation was so that I could tell my stories. I'm also getting old (turning 27 in a couple of months... *snicker*), and I just feel I wasted a lot of my time in previous years. I could've spent that time really being productive with my own work.

Well, I'm looking at this employment lull as an opportunity. I've recently been seriously researching generating revenue through online advertising, especially for webcomics. Now, my goal is in producing White Currents content through my Etherwing webspace, with free online flash episodes of Saphiel short stories and trying to gain a readership so that I can get money off of advertising. I've been looking into what kind of money I can make off of advertising online. The most popular webcomic registered with Project Wonderful seems to be able to pull in roughly $30/day for their advertising space. That roughly equates to about $840/month for that adspace. And these sites usually have two or more adspaces available for purchase, meaning they can easily earn about $1600/month just on advertising (I'm assuming these are USD rates). I know it's not a lot of money, but I'm not looking to get rich off of this. I just want to make a comfortable living doing what I love. Hell, I'll be happy if I can make $600/month. I can survive off of that.

Now, I'm not in any way, shape or form deluded enough to think that I'll be able to gain that kind of readership right away. If anything, it'll probably take several years to get to a point where I might potentially be able to rely on this project to sustain myself, a year in a best case scenario. I will have to rely on another source of income in the meantime. I'm looking into part time jobs, mainly. Something that'll give me enough money to pay the bills, but also give me enough free time to work on my new project seriously.

In any case, though, I'm pretty excited about all this, and I'm sure I'll be able to make a show that's one of the better webshows out there. I don't even really know if there's a market or community for the kind of thing I'm planning on making. Best thing I can think of is flash animations you can find on newgrounds or something like that. A friend of mine mentioned Xombie, and that's about the only thing I can think of which would be akin to what I'm thinking of doing.

Basically, I'm thinking of doing a webcomic, but in a semi-animated form. It's hard labeling it as anything. It's not a comic, it's not an animated show; it's something in between. It's a storyreel, polished and presented with a sort of RPG sensibility. I really don't want to describe it too much right now. I think the best thing for me to do is just ... do it! And show what I have in mind.

So, the plan as it stands now is this: I'm too busy to work on anything with this right now. I've been doing a lot of writing, specifically backstory for the actual content. I've also been going through a lot of website design ideas. A big source of inspiration for me right now is the Final Fantasy XIII site. Very simple, but it conveys the mood they're going for in the game. And it's a similar mood to what I want conveyed in my storyworld too. And yes, the site will be designed primarily with flash. The whole show is flash produced, in any case, yes?

Next week, once I move into my new home and get settled, I'll begin the actual design process for the site. I hope to get that online within a couple of days after I start the project. Then I'll be working on 2 main content projects: The first episode of the Saphiel short stories, and a trailer, with priority being placed on the Saphiel episode. The trailer will be a collage trailer, meant to be presented as a showreel for what White Currents is all about. It's sort of like the FMV demo opening you'd see in a video game. It's supposed to convey the mood, the flow and the look of the show. The reason I'm doing this is because I feel the Saphiel stories will be very slow and as such, might not pick up readers as well. I need something that'll hook people. Something that'll show people that THAT is what I want to do with the series.

The trailer will be done in 3D. I've been studying Blender, and I hope I can get used to it enough that I'll be able to use it as a full production software. The interface is very different from what I'm used to, so I'm finding it hard to adjust. But I'm sure with practice it'll become better.

So yea... website first, then scripts/sketches and full production of the first episode of Saphiel's story next, then the trailer. And then... we'll see where we go from there. I'll continue doing Saphiel's shorts for a while. Great thing about those is that they're self contained short stories, so it'll give me good practice with getting the hang of the workflow, and also with keeping up with self-imposed deadlines. Eventually I want to tell longer serial stories. The meat of the story world, if you will. But that'll come much later, after I get the practice I need for now.

On a semi-related note, I used to listen to the 1UP network's podcasts and their video review show, but I learned today that 1UP was actually taken over by a new owner, and about 2/3rds of the entire staff was laid off. The review show was dropped, along with most of the podcasts. But I also learned that the ex-staff from that company got together and decided to launch a new, independent online review show called Area5, and trying to turn it into a business. They managed to get donations from sympathetic fans and raised over $11,000, which they're planning on using as starting capital to buy new equipment and such. Wow... that is such an inspiring tale. These guys are pretty much in the same position I'm in right now and they're making things happen because they love to do what they do. I hope I have as much will as these guys to get my stuff off the ground.

Well, that's about all I have to say. Wow, what a long rant. Good thing no one reads this thing. Haha.

Developments as they come.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com40tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-47524097461684317602008-06-25T12:04:00.002-04:002008-06-25T12:24:42.212-04:00OutlookWell...

School's been done for a while now so I've been thinking on what I should be doing from now on. I got a job animating at a studio for a few months, which I'm happy about as it means I'll be getting paid. I hope that I can still squeeze in time to do my own thing along the way. Y'know, working on my graphic novel, a 3D portfolio, that kind of stuff, which is the really important thing for me.

Lately I've gotten to realize that animation really isn't the kind of job for me. At least, not the kind of animation I've been doing. What I've been really looking into is doing modelling and animation for games, specifically low to mid poly games. So I've been working on models for that, and hopefully I'll get around to animating them soon.

But of course, most of my focus is still on my graphic novel ambitions. I've really been trying to get my focus down on getting White Currents beyond the planning phase and into actual production. However, with a rather hectic schedule coming up what with me getting a job and all, I'm unsure if I can manage to get into the full swing of things. That, coupled with my indecision on a lot of aspects of the series (specifically which story to actually go with as my first foray into making comics) is making working on this very difficult. That being said, I'll definitely get something started soon. Expect updates in the White Currents blog soon.

Finally, to wrap up loose ends... well, the Etherwing website has been "under construction" for a while now. I really should get that all put together. It's not really high on my priorities right now, but definitely something that's been nagging at me for a while. I'll overhaul the actual website, and hopefully customize these blog pages too.

Oh yea, as for my film Blue Skies... I really wish I could work on that some more, but honestly, I have other priorities right now. I don't think it will get touched for a long while, if at all. Sadness...Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-14718825954443871602008-04-14T06:10:00.002-04:002008-04-14T06:12:36.789-04:00Blue SkiesWell, the film is as done as it's going to get for now. I'll get back to it later (hopefully), but for now I have to focus on putting together a demo reel and portfolio for job hunting.

Of the parts that I did complete, it didn't really turn out the way I wanted to. My favorite is probably the flight montage sequence. Sadly the pilots are missing in those shots. Oh well. Hope you enjoy

Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-48744477794374159442008-04-05T09:46:00.003-04:002008-04-05T09:50:54.824-04:00DeadlineWell, the deadline is 2 days away now, and I'm still far from finished. Sadness. However, I do intend on working on the film until the whole thing is complete, even after all the deadlines pass. I don't know why, considering that the music I use is copy-righted so I probably won't even be able to enter the film into festivals or anything... but I guess since I'm at least this far ahead of the game, I'll at least see it through to the end.

I don't think I'll post anymore videos on the subject matter, at least not until the film is in a presentable format.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-90933147268550417562008-03-24T04:05:00.002-04:002008-03-24T04:08:30.423-04:00Rough animation updateWell, I haven't finished rough animating yet, but I thought I might as well put up what I have so far, since I hadn't updated the blog in a while.

You'll also note that I changed the story quite significantly in the climax, when the girl falls off the plane. I feel it works better this way, since it's much less of an ... accident than before (although it's still an accident, I concede. lol).

Sigh, with the pace I'm going at working on this film, I highly doubt that I'll be able to finish it by the deadline. But one can dream. One can dream.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-48662990514038005772008-03-06T06:46:00.003-05:002008-03-06T06:48:37.964-05:00PosterJust wanted to post something of a poster for the film here.

Now I finally have time to get back to doing the film proper again.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-21496181040631905882008-03-01T13:48:00.002-05:002008-03-01T13:55:38.458-05:00Scheduling madnessSo my schedule has been wake up, go to studio, animate, animate, animate, come home, sleep, and repeat. I calculated that if I do about 5 seconds of animation a day, I'll be able to finish the animation by the deadline. That's of course, not counting the time I'll need to clean up, color and composite, not to mention do all the unfinished layouts I still have to do. But the 5 seconds also doesn't account for the fact that I don't need to animate about a third of my film by hand.

In any case, I'm aiming for an 8-10 second per day goal, which is quite a stretch, but I don't think unreachable. The next couple of days I'll be busy with other work, such as an essay and a poster for the film, which I'll need to complete for the yearbook. Sucks that it's interrupting my animating time, but them's the breaks.

I actually do have many more scenes animated, but I won't post them up here until I've gotten at least half of the film rough animated, just to save up me having to constantly upload the roughs. Hopefully that day will come soon.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-60246425915442021892008-02-25T00:01:00.003-05:002008-02-25T00:17:44.770-05:002D rough animation test

I finally started animating the 2D component of the film. This is pretty much a test to see how well I can match the 2D component to the 3D component in terms of movement. Originally I was going to drawn each frame according to the position of the 3D plane, but I found that it wasn't easy to make adjustments in posing and keys using that method, as I would have to pretty much straight-ahead animate the whole thing. So instead I decided to draw the character acting out her actions in an instanced animation clip, then match the clip to the movements of the 3D animation.

I might decide to instead put the 2D animation inside the 3D scene, thereby getting rid of the need to match movements altogether. I just need to figure out how to do animated textures in Maya, if that's the case.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-46200778821258699272008-02-14T21:25:00.004-05:002008-02-15T04:17:08.174-05:00Biplane turnaroundJust another quicky today. I did a little turnaround render of the plane to show off the spec and bump map for the plane. The bump map is very hard to make out in the low quality youtube version. It's mainly on the rivets, but also on between the metal sheets.

Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-67428671710896078232008-02-12T02:25:00.001-05:002008-02-12T02:27:13.297-05:00Biplane texturesJust a quickie progress update. I neglected to put it up since I wasn't happy with a few of the scenes (I'll rework them during production), but since it would be helpful to put up a rough idea of how the actual film might look like, I guess I might as well link this.

As for my progress, I'm just about done modelling the cockpit. That means I can start doing some animation with the first plane, which I'll begin during the weekend. For now I'll be spending time texturing the first plane and starting on the model for the second plane. Things are looking up.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-19791446234616086092008-01-28T01:01:00.000-05:002008-01-28T01:10:00.043-05:00Layout In-Progress

Well, I decided to take a break for all the 3D stuff on my film today (and also produce something showable for the next mentor meeting tomorrow), and started work on my first piece of layout material.

To save time, I'm working on a massive piece of layout, which I'll use in parts for the individual shots I have in my film. Well, I'll have several of these layouts for different shots. I'm planning on having certain shots set in different periods of the day, so this single aerial pan layout won't be enough for all of my shots. But this is pretty much the meat of what most of my shots will look like.

Keep in mind that it's still a work in progress. I'll have to add several layers of clouds, and the floating islands (which I might do in a separate file, and composite into the scene later on, I'll have to think about which method is best). Here's a closer look at the image:

Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-66367496430733941532008-01-27T06:27:00.001-05:002008-01-30T22:20:06.641-05:00ProgressSo I might as well make a progress report. Maybe it'll get me motivated to work harder.

I've been slacking off a lot lately. First week back from Christmas, I was doing pretty well. But then I just fell into a slump and I really haven't been able to get anything done. I managed to finish modelling the body of the bi-plane, one of the 3D models that I lost from the incident that I mentioned in my previous post. Now I have to finish with the cockpit, but that's proving to be quite the bitch to work on. I've become so unmotivated that I've resorted to playing Flight Sim instead (actually, I'd use any excuse to play it at this point).

But a few bouts of panic attacks have got me jump starting again, I think. I did more work today than I did the past two weeks. Hopefully this momentum will continue. Anyway, here's a few pictures of the plane modelled so far.

And here's a couple of videos demoing what little animation I put into the models thus far (it'll have a little more later on).

Upcoming tasks:
-Finish modeling cockpit
-UV map
-texture
-start on the second planeEdvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-81975491963215592962007-12-30T16:45:00.000-05:002007-12-30T16:54:03.221-05:00What a disaster...I think the worst thing that could've happened to anyone happened to me at the beginning of my winter break. I heard the school was closing down for the holidays, so I went there to grab my files and work on them at home. I plugged my USB drive to the computer, but didn't realize that it wasn't installed in the computer yet. Meanwhile, I browsed to my network folder which contained the files that I wanted, all the while being distracted by my friends. In my absent-mindedness, I believed the folder I was looking at was my USB drive and the files in it were my old, outdated files that I needed to delete. As soon as I hit the delete button, though, I realized to my horror that I actually erased the files in my network drive, my one and only copies of the files. My weeks of labor vanished under my fingertip, and there was no way to get them back. *sigh*

So here I am, in the middle of my winter break, and I'm working on 3D models that I should've finished a long time ago. -_-

Gonna be an agonizing second semester.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-75379274713872470172007-10-04T23:51:00.000-04:002008-01-30T22:22:19.112-05:004th Year FilmI guess I'll use this space to keep tabs on progress for my 4th year film, which I haven't really gotten around to titling yet. For now it's called "Blue Sky Fling" but honestly, that's going to change. Such a cheesy title.

I really don't have much to say about it, actually. The story is basically about a girl who's infatuated with a boy pilot, and so she goes after him in and aerial chase. When she realizes that she can't catch up, she throws herself from her cockpit and dives into a suicidal freefall. The boy has no choice but to rescue her, which means the girl gets to be united with her one true love. Awww.

Here's some pictures to help with the visually enabled.

Well start with the girl character:

And the boy character:

And the planes:

Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-21137927527473978452007-07-16T10:04:00.000-04:002007-07-16T10:11:38.835-04:00Status checkSo, my schedule turned out to be a disaster so far. Haven't finished the website. Hell, it's barely started to begin with. I'm not too sure on what direction I want to go with the website right now. I think that's the biggest problem. And today's the deadline for the Mig script too, which isn't anywhere near done. Thankfully I gave myself plenty of margins, so I should be able to catch up this week. If I don't have too much work at... work.

On another note, I think my 4th year film idea is pretty much nailed down now. I'll have to start work on that soon. I'll post more details on that here later.

Despite my setbacks, I don't feel too bad about it. Maybe because my thoughts are more concerned with Eureka 7, a really great anime series I just finished watching last night. You know that kind of empty feeling you get when you finish a great story and you feel like you're just back in the mundane world again? I'm feeling that right now. I want to be on more adventures with Renton and Eureka... but it's over now. Sigh.

Anyway, back to work.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-65885537423878734702007-07-08T22:43:00.000-04:002007-07-08T22:52:41.073-04:00Website and allOk, so I bought myself some webspace and a domain name. I feel pretty good about that. It feels like things are finally falling into place.

No more screwing around. I'm gonna take things seriously now. Real serious.

Who the hell am I kidding? I wasted the entire day lying around and wallowing in self-pity. This whole weekend was a waste of fucking time!! I didn't get a single thing I wanted done at all. Why do I procrastinate like this? Why am I so lazy?! WHY?! I've been sitting in front of this computer for the past 2 hours, trying to get myself to work. I started browsing some sites, with the excuse that I'm looking at reference material for my own site design. Instead I just stared blankly at the same fucking forum I go to everday. WHY?!

I can't believe what I'm doing! Or rather not doing. I'm so frustrated at myself. Have to get myself to work. Have to get into gear. Have to get serious to produce work. I'm so far behind as it is, and I can't afford to wait any longer. I have to start, but why is it so hard?

Okay, okay... let's calm down. Okay, the past couple of days have been a waste. That's ok. It's just two days... Tomorrow's a new day. I just have to get started tomorrow, and things will work out. I'll be in the studio. It'll be a nice working environment. I'll have plenty of drawing space, and a nice computer where I can start working with flash for my site. Yes, yes. Tomorrow's the day. I'll stay there all night tomorrow and get lots of work done for my site and White Currents.

If only I could believe it... T_TEdvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167995004150935383.post-7223857071551291012007-07-06T10:42:00.000-04:002007-07-06T10:55:45.049-04:00Ether Wing Activate!!I've been watching too much mahou shoujo anime -_-

Well, this is the blog for Ether Wing Studios, which is the brand name that I'd like to go by. Why Ether Wing? Because I love ethereal angel wings sprouting from my characters.

I'll be using this space to post concept ideas, story ideas and just random thoughts that I have about various creative projects that I'm involved in or would like to be involved in. And of course, I'll post up random pieces of sketches and other visual creative works that I might concoct (I hate saying art; my work is not art; I'm a commercial whore).

This blog is mainly for random, mundane, everyday thoughts that go through my mind. I have blogs of a more specialized nature for the individual projects I'm involved in. Well, I only have one right now, but that's plenty enough, I guess. It can be found here. That's a blog for specific White Currents material, and any runoff will come over here.

Well, here's to hoping for a new beginning.Edvardianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03145377564034851883noreply@blogger.com3
